The name ‘Midwood’ comes from the dutch settlers that arrived in 1652, noting how wooded the area was at the time. The area was undeveloped until the 20th century when immigrants from from the Soviet Union, Jamaica, Haiti, Guyana, Mexico and Ireland arrived. Midwood is a multi-ethnic neighborhood boasting with dozens of different languages. Today, Midwood, remains a largely Orthodox Jewish neighborhood. But, is it safe to move to Midwood, Brooklyn?
There are many notable people who grew up in Midwood. One of which is Senator Bernie Sanders who interestingly enough, is not a popular candidate in his hometown. Many other well-known politicians, artists, writers and film-makers have lived either grown up or spent some time living in Midwood. This list includes Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Woody Allen, Marisa Tomei, Arthur Miller, Noah Baumbach, among others.
Though Brooklyn is now associated as a mecca for hipster youth, Midwood remains largely affordable and un-gentrified. Median rents in Midwood go for under $2000, while rents in other parts of Brooklyn go for $2,500. According to the Furman Center, “Sales prices for all residential property types increased by 1% in Flatbush/Midwood between 2017 and 2018, compared to an increase of 4% in Brooklyn and an increase of 2.5% citywide.”
In an article published by the New York Times in 2015, Midwood was described as a hybrid urban-suburban neighborhood. This is because many people who live in Midwood live in single-family homes instead of apartments.
IS IT SAFE TO MOVE TO MIDWOOD, BROOKLYN?
Midwood is one of the safest neighborhoods in Brooklyn. In 2010, an area of Midwood was the safest neighborhood in NYC, reporting a 1 in 500 chance of being a victim of crime. Specifically, the safest area was on Bedford Avenue along East 22nd and 26th street and between Avenue K and I. Moreover, the NY Post writes: “The stretch of Bedford Avenue is also the third-safest urban neighborhood in the nation, based on a survey of 7,685 areas in 29 of the biggest American cities.”
SCHOOLS IN MIDWOOD
Midwood has some of the best public schools in Brooklyn, including Midwood High School, James Madison High School and Edward R. Murrow High School.
Midwood High School is one of the best public schools in Brooklyn, offering over 22 AP classes and boasting high SAT scores. Moreover, Midwood High School sends students to some of the top colleges throughout the country and has a partnership with Brooklyn College, which is right next door.
Edward R. Murrow High School has exceptional programs in theatre, music and chess. In 2008, Mel Brooks was so impressed by the their theatre program, he granted them the first performing rights for The Producers. Alumni include Darren Aronofsky, Lil Mama, Joey Badass, among others
James Madison High School is also one of the best high schools in the area. James Madison offers various programs including a Law Institute, Bio-Medical Institute and Academy of Finance. Madison has far wider class offerings than traditional high schools. It’s no surprise that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Senator Chuck Schumer went to James Madison.
So, is it safe to move to Midwood, Brooklyn? Yes, Midwood is not only safe. Midwood is one of the best neighborhoods in Brooklyn when it comes to value, education and history.
